Include Net Futures Gains in Tax Forms/Tax Summary (Form 8949 & Schedule D)
Feature Request: Include Net Futures Gains in Tax Forms/Tax Summary (Form 8949 & Schedule D) What is being requested? Users would like CoinTracker to automatically incorporate net futures gains into tax documents, particularly Form 8949 and Schedule D . Currently, net futures gain/loss data is only accessible by filtering the Transactions page for the Margin gains category — it is not included in exported tax forms . Why is this needed? Without this integration, users are left to manually adjust tax forms, which increases the risk of errors and reduces the usefulness of CoinTracker’s automated reporting tools. Including these gains directly in the tax reports would streamline tax filing and improve compliance for users engaging in margin or futures trading. What can users do now? Until this feature is implemented, users can follow these manual steps: Filter the Transactions page for the Margin gains category Download the transactions history CSV Consult a tax professional to ensure accuracy and compliance. Manually add a line item to the Capital Gains CSV or Form 8949 titled "Net Crypto Futures" with the total PnL (profit or loss). Manually update Schedule D, referencing the added entry. Refer to our Margin Trading Tax Guide for general guidance. Manual Entry Format for Form 8949 & Schedule D: Description of Property: Underlying asset (e.g., BTC, ETH) Date Acquired: Date the position was opened Date Sold: Date the position was closed Proceeds: Realized profit or loss (PnL) Cost Basis: \$0.00 Gain/Loss: Same as PnL (may be negative) Additional Integration Suggestions Display the net futures gain/loss as a separate line on the tax summary page, while still including it in the dashboard’s total net gain/loss . Tag "margin" transactions into a separate cost basis queue , excluded from capital gains calculations, mirroring behavior for exchanges like Kraken and BitMEX. Disclaimer This integration assumes reporting according to standard tax treatment for margin trades. It does not cover Section 1256 contracts, 475(f) trader elections, or other advanced tax scenarios . Users should consult a tax advisor to determine the correct treatment for their situation.
